Job Description

SUMMARY OF ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES            

 

The post holder will be an advocate for Newark and Sherwood demonstrating leadership and knowledge to internal and external stakeholders. The post holder will play a lead role in the development and delivery of innovative marketing campaigns on a range of commercially focused promotional activities and initiatives including income generating activities pursued by the Council along with overall promotion of place including tourist attractions. This will involve creating and executing the operational marketing and brand plan, creating inspiring campaigns, deciding on appropriateness of opportunities that are presented, maximising the impact of well-developed campaigns and evaluating the effectiveness of the campaigns and the operational marketing and brand plan. The role contributes to the cornerstones of the Council ethos (Prosperity, People, Place and Public Service) and is crucial in the Prosperity and Place aspects. 14% of businesses in the District are Tourism related, therefore a major contributor to economic impact.

 

LIAISON / CONTACT WITH:

Prepare reports for relevant Committees and attend meetings to present them when required.

Daily contact on an adhoc basis.

Work alongside CMT and BMs to promote a range of commercially focused activities externally using innovative marketing campaigns.

Work alongside relevant BMs to develop marketing communications and PR initiatives to promote the Newark and Sherwood tourism offer and wider business.

Provision of advice, guidance and support as required.

For all aspects of a supervisory relationship, work programming, active input into team feedback activity

To provide professional advice and support to staff on an as and when required basis.

External

  • Key tourism related organisations such as Visit England, Visit Britain, Visit Nottinghamshire, tourist attractions and tourism related businesses in the district.
  • The residents of the district and regional and national in-bound visitor markets  (e.g. communicating, in a range of formats, the offers within the place and adapting content to promote its offer to those markets and key segments)
  • Tour operators as appropriate, media organisations
  • The destination management organisations for Newark, Southwell and Sherwood and the Tourism Action Group

Matrix management of resources with key internal business partners, including tourism, marketing communications and heritage, culture and visitors.

 

MAIN ACTIVITIES, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. To play a lead role in contributing to the Council’s objectives by developing and delivering creative/innovative marketing campaigns on a range of commercially focussed activities that have a direct link to income generation for the district.
  2. Working with the Director – Customers, Tourism Action Group, the Destination Management Organisations and Tourism to develop, implement and review an operational marketing and brand plan linked to the Tourism Strategy and Destination Management Plans for the District for attracting and dispersing tourists to the tourism products within the district.
  3. With an attract and disperse model for visitors, the post holder will actively promote the attractions and facilities of the district to as wide an audience as possible as well as key segments, assessing the impact of campaigns and improvements as set out in individual business plans.
  4. To establish, maintain and enhance relationships with the media and tourism related organisations with the aim of understanding key audiences and maximising the impact of marketing campaigns and promotional activities ensuring that product and services are relevant and targeted.
  5. To assist with the development and maintenance of the Council’s online presence, maintaining and developing the tourism website, designing and delivering the social media strategy and associated channels and planning and creating tourism campaigns. To create engaging and inspiring copy that will drive an increase in visitor numbers.
  6. Researching, devising and implementing tourism campaigns for the district to ensure that all marketing activities enhance the Council’s brand position and the aims/objectives of the Tourism Strategy. Issuing press releases, statements and feature articles relating to tourism for our district.
  7. To analyse and apply audience insights and evaluation to the marketing planning process, making full use of systems available.
  8. To have direct influence on destination campaigns and manage the expectations of tourism related businesses in the district.
  9. Provide creative and innovative approaches to marketing and promotion that will inspire senior managers, tourism organisations and visitors.
  10. To actively support Tourism related businesses in developing and promoting their offer, whilst ensuring this is co-ordinated and consistent with the Destination Management Plans for the district.
  11. To be the central point of contact for all Tourism Marketing related activity in the district.
  12. To lead external consultants where appropriate on specific projects in order to better understand and take forward the Tourism strategy for the Council.
  13. To be responsible for the Promotion of the Tourism budget and the effective use of the funds available and matrix management responsibilities for key business partners in Heritage, Culture and Visitors, Tourism and Marketing and Communications.
  14. To identify and develop funding bids relevant to the evolving opportunities that the districts heritage and offer creates.
  15. To influence at a regional, national and where possible international level to inspire visitors to the district.
  16. To use creativity and innovation in delivering the marketing plan and be open to new opportunities as they arise, whilst carefully monitoring the impact.
  17. To undertake any other duties of a nature consistent with those above that may arise from time to time.

 

 

HEALTH AND SAFETY

 

The post holder will be required to uphold the District Council's Health and Safety Policy and amendments made thereto by the District Council and comply with all relevant health and safety legislation.

 

RISK MANAGEMENT

 

The Council is committed to the effective management of risk. It is the responsibility of all employees to carry out their duties and responsibilities with adequate regard for Risk Management, as outlined within the Council's Risk Management Strategy and Policy.

 

To embed risk management effectively into all areas of service delivery including integration within service plans and to assist with and where necessary and relevant to your service area of control, manage all risks including entry into, updating and maintenance of those specific and corporate entries of the Strategic Risk Register.

TRAINING

 

The post holder will be required to keep under review their own development needs and developmental needs of their staff (where appropriate) keeping informed of current issues and appropriate legislation.  Learning needs for yourself and your staff should be discussed and determined at annual Performance Appraisals.

 

SPECIAL FEATURES AND PROVISIONS

 

1.         The salary grade is inclusive of work and such hours as necessary for the efficient performance of duties and the effective operation of the Section.  The public is entitled to demand of a Local Government Officer conduct of the highest standard and confidence in his/her integrity would be shaken where with the least suspicion, however ill-founded, to arise that he or she could be influenced by improper motives.  An Officer should treat with extreme caution any offer of gift, favour or hospitality to him/her personally, gratuities of any kind should not be accepted in the normal discharge of duties.

 

2.          The post holder is required to be contactable outside of normal working hours.

 

  1. The post requires the individual to have regular access to a vehicle to enable them           to travel within/outside the district to carry out their duties.  Duties may include     (but are not restricted to) attending meetings, different work locations, conducting        site and other visits and transporting heavy/bulky equipment or materials for    business purposes as and when required.
