Reporting to: Assistant Director

Location: Home working with regular meetings in Southend-on-Sea and/or central London - The job will be part time – 17.5 hours per week (2.5 days) 

Purpose of the post: The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) is the professional and learned society for qualified and practising mathematicians. It has a membership of around 5,000 comprising of mathematicians from all sectors, as well as those with an interest in mathematics.

The Marketing Officer will support the development and delivery of our membership marketing and communication plan and play a key part in communicating our messages. The post will support IMA’s work by ensuring that our membership profile, products and services are promoted effectively to achieve income through membership growth.


  • Support the development and implementation of a membership marketing and communication plan
  • Work with colleagues to plan marketing and communication activities, focussing on member recruitment and retention
  • Review and revise existing marketing and promotional material, and create new material as required
  • With colleagues, review and revise existing web content and create new material as required
  • Produce e- marketing material
  • Engage with relevant audiences through IMA’s social media channels
  • Attend relevant meetings, conferences and events
  • Monitor, evaluate and report on the effectiveness of marketing and communication activities


  • Educated to degree level, or equivalent
  • Marketing or communications qualification is desirable. e.g. Chartered Institute of Marketing


  • Experience of working in a Communications and/or Marketing role
  • Experience of working for or with a professional membership body/ learned society is desirable
  • Experience of supporting the planning and development of medium or longer term marketing and communications strategies and activities
  • Experience of e-marketing and use of social media in a professional context

Key Skills

  • Excellent IT skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, Social Media
  • Excellent attention to detail, proof reading and editing skills
  • Excellent written English including the ability to write web content and effectively for e-media
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Ability to build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Team player with ability to work on own initiative
  • Excellent administration and organisational skills, including the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver to deadlines
