About the role

We are seeking to recruit a Manager for the Marketing, Communications and Knowledge Management Division. This is a maternity cover position, provisionally for a period of 8 months, from December 2018 to August 2019.

The Marketing, Communications and Knowledge Management (MKT) Division:

  • Develops and implements Landell Mills’ communications strategy

  • Develops and maintains Landell Mills’ website and social media channels

  • Provides support to all Divisions for the production of print and digital communication materials

  • Provides communications expertise on donor funded projects – including strategic communications, design, copywriting and quality control of written, visual and audio-visual materials

  • Develops opportunities to renew and expand the Division’s portfolio of communications projects, including bidding on donor funded (mainly EU) communications contracts

  • Manages nine EU-funded communications contracts, with a total value of €3.5 million encompassing:

    • Communication strategy design and development

    • PR and media relations

    • Design and development of printed, online and audio-visual communication materials

    • Website design

    • Social media management

    • Event management

The Division currently manages communications contracts with EU Delegations to Zambia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan as well as visibility projects promoting the African Peace Facility (APF) and the External Investment Plan (EIP).

Duties and responsibilities

The successful applicant will have the following responsibilities:

  • Management of the Division

    • Develop and implement the Division’s strategy, ensuring that technical and financial targets are met

    • Manage the MKT team, ensuring they undertake their respective tasks

  • Strategic communications activities

    • Develop and implement the company’s Marketing and Communications strategy and track progress against targets

    • Oversee development of the company website and SharePoint-based project database

    • Write and/or sign off on content produced for the Landell Mills website and social media channels

    • Liaise with HR Manager on development of recruitment tools and oversee management of LinkedIn Recruiter accounts

    • Conduct fee paid communications assignments on behalf of the company as required

  • Project management

    • Advise the MKT team on operational and contractual aspects of project management

    • Manage projects and liaise with project teams for the successful execution of projects, including ensuring project outputs are produced to a high standard and adhere to brand guidelines

    • Plan and oversee contract budgets

    • Oversee expert selection process

    • Oversee management of administrative aspects of projects, including preparing and/or signing off on contractual documents and project reports

    • Act as Quality Control Manager on donor funded communications projects, ensuring project outputs are produced to a high standard and adhere to brand guidelines

    • Visit projects as required, ensuring that the backstopping team are undertaking their responsibilities effectively

  • Business development

    • Identify and follow up new business opportunities. Position the company for future work through client contact, country visits, and networking with relevant stakeholders

    • Oversee, support and prepare Expressions of Interest and tenders for communications projects (including sourcing experts, and preparing the methodology, work plan and commercial offer)

    • Liaise with the Framework Contract (FWC) Division to support communication and visibility proposals under the COM Lot 2 EU contract

Skills and experience

1 Management                                                              

  • An ability to manage teams both in situ and remotely.
  • Proven experience of successful project delivery.
  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to work to a high standard, prioritise multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

2 Marketing and communications

  • Strong attention to detail, demonstrated by experience of reviewing and signing off on written content, design layouts and audio-visual communications materials, ensuring high quality standards are maintained.
  • Experience of managing websites and social media channels.
  • CIM /CIPR level 4 or equivalent qualification and experience.

3 Business development

  • Business orientated and numerate, and confident in your ability to deliver financial targets.
  • Experienced in the preparation of proposals for international donor agencies (e.g. EU, DFID, ADB or others).

3 General

  • Ability and willingness to travel, where required, to manage the portfolio of work and develop new business.
  • Fully computer literate.
  • Perfectly fluent in English.
  • Proof of right to work in the UK.
  • A working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud would be beneficial.
  • Experience of working in the field of international development and/or managing and delivering donor-funded project contracts.
  • Business level fluency in French or Spanish would be beneficial.

The ideal candidate will have most if not all of the above skills and experience. However, we would encourage candidates without particular skill or experience to specify aspects they are competent with and which not.
