About us

The University of Sussex Students’ Union is the heart and home of the student community at Sussex, and offer a space for every one of our members to make the most of their time at University.

The staff, officers and volunteers at Sussex dedicate their time, energy and work to making University the best it can be for all students.

We have recently launched our new, five year strategy to become the number one destination for help and advice for our members. To do this we must engage all students at Sussex by moving our services to the channels they use; we will become a truly digital students’ union.

This is a huge undertaking but we set our ambitions high because we believe the incredible and passionate student community at Sussex deserves that, we want to make them proud to be part of Sussex.

Our mission is to put students at the heart of everything we do, to be a Union our students are proud to be members of.

About you

We are at a huge point of change and we are looking for a positive and adaptable leader to join the senior leadership team, playing a key role in making our big plans to turn the Students’ Union into a truly digital organisation a reality.

We need someone who is willing to bring their skills and expertise in digital and marketing to the party, and passionately share that knowledge and experience with their new Union family to take the organisation from good to great. We’re looking for someone who can take a great idea and turn it into web and app-based experiences using your technical knowledge of SEO, SEM, UX, HTML, CCS and all the other acronyms we are only just starting to understand.

Working with the rest of the senior leadership team you will inspire Union staff and officers on how they can communicate their messages creatively with students and drive up digital participation with targeted marking, whilst improving our reputation, making sure the student community really do get the best of us.

You will take on all aspects of developing and delivering our digital strategy, ensuring a great user experience and increasing growth in active membership across all of our services and activities. You will need confidence in these areas to hit the ground running at a time of great organisational change. You’ll have a lot of scope to contribute your ideas and perspective whilst being flexible and incorporating others’ contributions.

This is an amazing opportunity for someone who is not afraid of change and being a key player in transforming an organisation, maybe looking for a new and challenging project. Our expectations of this role are high because our ambitions are high, we want the very best and committed staff to help us get there.

We want Sussex to be a great place to work so that our staff are able to give the student community the best service possible. For this reason work life balance is extremely important to us so we have lots of great plans in place and support to make sure you are able to flourish in this role, including volunteering leave and flexible work around your family. We also offer a generous annual leave entitlement and pension.

Being a space for everyone makes us tick so we welcome applications from everyone, including but not exclusive to; people with an ethnic minority or Chinese background, people with a disability, people with dependants, and people who identify as LGBTQ+. We conduct anonymous shortlisting and all of our interview panels have Unconscious Bias Training in order to support the above. If you have any suggestions as to how we could improve our language or application process, please let us know.

As a representative body one of our key aims is to increase BAME applicants to work in the Students' Union. To support this we will ask you an optional question about your ethnic origin. Not providing this information will not adversely affect your application for the role. This information will be hidden during the application process. BAME staff are also welcome and supported to join our BAME Staff Network
